Changes in 2010

Changes have been made to the Academy Award for Achievement in Makeup for the 2010 Academy Awards.

The Board of Governors agreed to change the wording in the award so there can only be three nominees and statuettes awarded per film.

Leonard Engelman, the academy's make-up branch governor, said nominations may include, “the names of the primary individuals—not to exceed three in number—directly involved with, and principally responsible for, the make-up and hairstyling achieved. No more than two statuettes will normally be given in the make-up category. On occasion, a third statuette may be awarded when there are three primary and essential contributors to the achievement(s).”

The change is "tremedously important" for hairstylists and make-up artists in the industry, Engelman said.

“These few choice words give the branch and the academy an opportunity to better recognize the great achievements seen on screen today. We know that what is accomplished for an Oscar-nominated film in most cases is not solely accomplished by one, two or even three artists, but by a group of artists working together.”

Deyn, who is in her prime, is rumored to be leaving the industry to spend more time with rocker boyfriend Miles Kayne of the Last Shadow Puppets.

When this lifestyle becomes a bore, Deyn plans on dipping into acting.

"She said its so boring and lonely hanging around studios all day, she's not enjoying it anymore. She's got an acting agent and told them she wants to get involved in interesting British films." A source close to Deyn told Daily Mirror.

Makeup is not the only thing Patrice Boudreau, national makeup artist for Clarins Canada, and his team of eight worked. The styling team used secret weapon, body lotion to make lingerie models at the Secrets of Seduction fashion show appear to have the healthiest skin.

Aside from adding color to the delicate outfits, Boudreau had the task that most men would die for- lathering up the beauties to glow on the runway. "The girls are still fighting the blahs of dry winter skin and we haven't had a summer yet. This just makes the body look better," he told TheStar.com.

Moisturizer is possibly one of the last tools you would expect to play such an important role on the runway.

"The bright runway lights make skin look flat and dull. This helps make it look hydrated and moist," he explained. "It's a trick a lot of runway shows use."

UK Vogues Speaks Out

UK Vogue editor, Alexandra Shulman, has joined the fight against anorexia associated with the modeling industry.

In a letter to top designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Balen-ciago, Shulman complained that Vogue is spending an unnecessary amount of time retouching photos to make models appear healthy. She also said, "We have now reachedd the point where many of the sample sizes don't comfortably fit even the established stars."

Shulman's attack follows the death of three models related to complications from malnutrition after shows decided all models must fit in a size zero dress.

The anorexia problem is always big news in the fashion industry with models shrinking smaller and smaller every year.

M.A.C (which stands for Makeup Art Cosmetics), one of the world's most well-known make-up lines has four looks they are using on models for the upcoming runway season.

1. Emphasized darken eyes
2. Fearless Kisser
3. Pearly Skin
4. Sharply Shaded Cheeks

''You can have eyes or lips -- pick one,'' says Fred Vellon, a Miami-based senior makeup artist for M.A.C. ``You can't have both.''

Although the clothes show a cultural connectedness, experts argue the make-up is far from that. In fact The Miami Herald described it as "less noticeable and less forgiving."

Nicole Phelps from Style.com said that use of make-up on the runway may not directly affect the sales of make-up in the fall. ''I don't think the public necessarily pays attention to the runway in term of makeup trends,'' Phelps says, ``but the people doing hair and makeup on the runways are doing hair and makeup for celebrities, and the public does pay attention to that.''

The Miami Herald's Fashion editor is giving everyone a heads-up on what to expect on the runways this fall:

• Lidvicious -- This is a look you can embrace even if Sid Vicious isn't your idea of beautiful. Lids are darkened and blended and gently smudged eyeliner, with underplayed brows and lips. Who did it: Karl Lagerfeld, Zac Posen, Nicole Miller.

• Who's That Girl -- Lips take center stage, dressed in red, orange or fuchsia. Mascara and eye color are shunned but brows are stronger, a la early Madonna. Maybe you shouldn't try this without supervision. Who did it: Berardi, Alberta Ferretti, Salvatore Ferragamo.

• New Romantics -- Think Kim Basinger and Barbie, but don't let that stop you. With brushed-up brows, turn to gold and metallic shades for a minimal luminescence. Who did it: Marni, Matthew Williamson, Missoni.

• Sculpture Club -- Joan Collins-eque contouring and highlighting is key here in an effort to ''maximize hollowness'' of the cheek with a darker shade. Tough to pull off, frankly, unless you're on the runway. Who did it: Blumarine, Balmain, Rodarte.

New DVB Jeans Expected Next Year

The Daily Mail (UK) reported that Victoria Beckham has enlisted a new team of designer to revamp her DVB jean line.

According to sources, Beckham has turned to Roland Mouret who also assisted her with her debut dess collection.

Beckham use to work alongside Rock & Republic, but recent fell out when the label used cheaper material for the designer jeans.

A spokesperson for DVB said the new line will launch next year.

The South Bend Tribune recently interviewed Rebecca Maalouf, founder of Camellia Cosmetics, who has been a makeup artist since 1994. Who has watched makeup trends go from glam to grunge, and everything in between.

How long have you owned Camellia? Why did you decide to start the company?

What kind of education, certification, and experience do you need to have to be a makeup artist?

Makeup artistry is just that, an art. Most of us are also artists outside of the makeup industry. It's an apprentice education. You work closely with a successful artist until they decide you are ready to run with it. Then you continue to work under their guidance.

Can you explain what you do as a makeup artist?

What we see that you don't see is how to translate facial features to capitalize on one or another. We find balance, and can even create an illusion to trick the eye into paying attention to one feature over another. Women come in wanting to cover up; as an artist we can provide them with better options. I offer women an easily accessible fashion and image statement through makeup.

What do you like best about what you do?

I love it when a woman just will not take her eyes off of the mirror. The wow factor. It's being able to look at someone objectively, and give them the gift of finding their signature look, or self expression.

What's most challenging about being a makeup artist?

Women have had bad experiences. All too often I have to re-assure women I understand they have no interest in looking like they just came out of a makeup store, I understand they really just want to look pretty, without too much work. We actually just started offering a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee on all of our event makeup applications, just to be able to give women some power back. We want to let them know we are different and are not going to give you a look that is not absolutely beautiful. We want to celebrate the face, not the makeup.

Do you have advice for others who would like to be a make-up artist?

My college, Gabrielle Thompson, always tells would-be artists they might want to start with some art classes. And there are a few good schools that come into Chicago and Detroit with Emmy-award winning makeup artists. Artsy people always seem to want to start at the top, but you have to be humble and work under a successful artist to learn even a portion of what you need to know.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards took place June 20 at the Lincoln Center in New York. This event is so big it is compared to the apparel industry's Oscars.

Some highlights?
Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who got their start in their parents' guest house in Pasadena only four years ago, won womenswear designer of the year. Their line is described as "horror-film-meets-haute-couture." The sisters are self-taught and found success with the help of actresses like Kirsten Dunst.

Menswear designer of the year went to Italo Zucchelli for Calvin Klein and Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders'.

Jack Mccollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler were winners of the accessory designer of the year award.

Justin Giunta and Tim Hamilton picked up the Swarovski awards and Marc Jacobs won the international award for his Louis Vuitton work.

All winners are picked by the CFDA'S 100+ members.

The 28th annual show was hosted by Tracey Ullman and featured Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Fallon, Jack White and Blake Lively.
